I conceived of the blueprint for Reading the World when researching literacy rates and global education access about ten years ago. More kids miss out on literacy and basic education in Africa than on any other continent.
Globally, just over 86% of folks over the age of 15 are literate—they can read and write (2024). And men (90%) outpace women (83%). But in sub-Saharan Africa, that figure drops to about 61% (2010). Many African nations have made significant gains in the last half century, largely as they have regained power from colonial forces. But challenges remain daunting: money, training, supplies, and infrastructure.
Even among African nations that have comparatively favorable overall literacy rates, significant gaps exist, largely because school deserts, regions where children have little or no access to education, persist. Globally, about 84% of children complete primary school; in sub-Sahara Africa, that figure is 63% . Completion rates for lower secondary school are even worse: 71% world, 38% Africa.
Reading the World addresses literacy and school deserts in Africa.
Our Approach:
Unlike many nonprofit organizations that begin with a product or service, we seek out the present challenges of a region and then innovate potential solutions. Where there is a need for instructional support, I will design and deliver professional development. Where there is a need for material supplies, I will secure the most suitable and educationally sound products. Where there is a need for infrastructure, I will seek funding for appropriate building supplies and labor. The point is to remain flexible and honor the local voices and values while drawing on my own experiences and network of academic experts to guide outcomes for each project.
We aim for flexible, long-term, and sustainable solutions that have a direct impact on students.
Your Participation:
In 2015 the United Nations member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals . Goal number four reflects education: to
“ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
It is incumbent upon all nations to support basic education for every child. Donating to Reading the World is one way you can participate in fulfilling this promise.
Every dollar of your support goes to completing our missions. Nobody in this organization takes a salary.
Check back here often for updates on our projects, and contact us if you have any questions or ideas. Reading the World is your pathway to becoming a global education partner.
Thanks for reading.
